Winners of the 6th f2n National Business Awards Announced

The 6th annual F2N National Business Awards took place on Friday 24 November at St George’s Hotel, Llandudno. The awards recognise business excellence, resilience and future growth.

Hosted and judged by Olympic downhill skier, Chemmy Alcott, the glittering event attracted a record number of entries from across the UK. The night was also an opportunity for the F2N network to continue to raise money for their charity of the year Ty Gobaith. The charity was selected by F2N members who pledged to raise £2,017 throughout the year and smashed their target by raising almost £3,000 (£2,926), the majority being raised during the awards.

Addressing the audience before announcing the award winners, Chemmy told the 140 strong audience that it was an honour to judge such inspirational business awards.

She said: “It’s an honour to judge these inspirational business awards. It was a tough task and the pressure to choose the winners was difficult. I went with my heart and chose the businesses that showed honesty and vulnerability. Those that had struggled and persevered to overcome their adversities to end in triumph.”

Chemmy, who is widely regarded at one of Britain’s greatest ever skiers, also shared her own personal stories including that of overcoming seemingly insurmountable hurdles to be selected to compete at the Winter Olympics. This was following her recovery from breaking her leg so badly the shattered bones broke through her hard plastic ski boot. She joked: “I don’t remember too much about it – ketamine is amazing!”

Chemmy also urged people to ‘push yourself every day to be a better version of yourself’, saying: “I spent 20 years chasing my dream to ski in the Olympics. It took passion, perseverance and a lot of heart. Your dreams make you who you are and every day you push yourself to be a better version of yourself. When on the road to following my dreams I never lost, I only won or learnt.”

Nina Sardar, founder of F2N Business Network who organised the awards said:

“Once again we’ve had a lot of nominations from all over the UK which has been demonstrated by the winners of many of the categories. One of the main difference of these awards is that the winner is selected by the host which in many ways makes them unique. Chemmy is an uplifting and motivating person who has overcome so many difficulties on her Olympic journey, so to be chosen by her to be an F2N business award winner really is a massive achievement.”

The winners are:

Winner of the Green Business of the Year partnered by Swayne Johnson is Hydro Veg Kits, a simple way to grow vegetable created by Sue Tonks.

Chemmy Alcott chose Hydro Veg Kits as the winner as it was ‘an exciting project with huge growth potential and a fun vision’.

Sue Tonks of Hydro Veg Kits, based in Coventry, said it felt ‘incredible’ to win. Her kits are a brand new initiative and are a simple way to grow vegetables 365 days a year.

Sue says “We’ve been working on these kits for just over two years and to win this award is incredible. The kits grow vegetables with no digging, weeding, slugs or snails – or even water. They’re organic, easy to use and are great fun. Our aim is to get it working over in India and Africa.”

Winner of the Network Marketing Person of the Year partnered by Handy Office, is Bridgette Handley, Brand Ambassador of Tropic Skincare based in Rhos on Sea, Colwyn Bay.

Chemmy recognised the passion Bridgette showed for the business and the growth she had achieved across the UK in just three years.

Bridgette Handley said: “While I’m thrilled to win this award – it’s all thanks to Tropic Skincare that I’ve achieved so much. Their business ethos is all about enabling people, especially women to become successful. Sir Alan Sugar and Susie Ma [who are behind Tropic Skincare] are both inspirational and extremely supportive.”

Marina Kogan of Kogan Coaching said:

“I’m very happy to receive recognition of my achievements both in my part of developing a new coaching model [Salutogenic Coaching Model] and especially for the development of my coaching qualification which helps bring the Salutogenic model alive. Chemmy said of Rachel: “Rachel stands out as a fabulous [networking] host. She is warm, welcoming and instils confidence in people.”

Rachel was ‘in shock’ to be announced the winner, she said: “It came as a complete surprise, I’m in shock I think. The most important thing about this award for me is that I was nominated by a fellow networker. That someone has taken their time to nominate me and think me worthy of being nominated has completed blown me away.”

The newly created Chemmy Alcott Leadership Award partnered by Supertemps, was picked up by Andrea Monteith of Bangor. Andrea created the successful Your Local Dragon, a printed directory featuring local businesses.

Chemmy selected Andrea the winner for her “Hard working, vibrant, creative mind who works tirelessly to promote local business. She applies her nurturing nature and supports businesses to succeed.”

Andrea said: “I’m really, really pleased to have been selected as the winner of the F2N Leadership Award. Its recognition and confirmation that our years of hard work have had a positive impact. We always try to go above and beyond for all our clients and it’s nice to have recognition for that.”

Winner of the Khizar Sardar Business Man of the Year award, partnered by Addysg Oedolion Cymru / Adlut Learning Wales, was Jonathan Quinn of Hygienic Innovations Ltd. Jonathon was spurred on after watching the milk steamer being wiped down with a cloth while at a coffee house. Jonathon also runs two other successful businesses - Blockwalls who produce interlocking ‘lego’ blocks used in construction and Bullion Tech, a metal recovery business.

Chemmy said of Jonathon: “From watching dirty cloths being used to clean milk steamers in September 2016 Jonathon was proactive in creating a solution. He now has four working prototypes and a business that has amazing potential. This is especially rewarding for me as I love coffee!”

Jonathon said: “Winning Business Man of the Year is just brilliant. We’ve won other awards which we’re obviously very proud of but this is a prestigious award that covers all that we do.”

The Saira Khan Business Woman of the Year Award, partnered by F2N Business Network was presented to Helen Swindley of Proactive Footcare. Helen runs a successful podiatry business in Llandudno Junction specialising in orthotics.

Chemmy was blown away by Helen, saying: “Helen’s positive attitude and focus have seen her managing her dreams to create a successful business. She deserves every accolade she receives.”

The New Business of the Year Award, partnered by Tudno TV, was picked up by Daniel Bridgewater of Buckt, based in Birmingham. Buckt (pronounced Bucked) is a ticket and activities subscription box where monthly subscribers receive five mystery activities every month. The activities could be anything from cinema tickets to mediation and yoga.

Chemmy selected Buckt for showing ambition and drive. She said: It’s evident that Daniel’s ambition and drive means that he works outside the box. This in turn has created a great business with massive growth potential.”

Daniel said: “I only started the business in January this year and I genuinely didn’t think I would win, especially as the other finalists were just fantastic. I’m planning on expanding the business north and down to London and with the connections I’ve already made through winning this award, North Wales is also now on the agenda.”

Business of the Year Award, partnered by Face for Business, is Swayne Johnson Solicitors, who have offices in North Wales and Cheshire. The award was collected by Sarah Noton, Managing Director of Swayne Johnson.

Chemmy said of Swayne Johnson: “This is an incredibly successful business with a fantastic internal ethos combined with ambitious growth. They have a positive impact on the local community and beyond.”

10 Top Tips for Creating Award Winning F2N Business Award Nominations!

10 Top Tips for Creating Award Winning f2n Business Award Nominations!
By multi award winner Teresa Carnall of TBC Marketing and Press and PR Award Partner

1 Give yourself plenty of time to complete your nominations. Completing your nomination form properly takes time. Don’t leave it till the last minute. Plan what you’re going to say and give yourself time to gather your evidence (more about that later). The deadline for the F2N nominations is Thursday September 21 at midnight.

2 Make sure you read and fully understand the award criteria. This is probably the main reason why businesses don’t win awards. Not that they aren’t worthy but they haven’t read the criteria fully. Don’t let that be you!

3 This goes with number two. Complete your nomination so that it answers the award criteria. This is especially the case if you are entering more than one category. Do not put the same responses in for each category you’ve entered. Tailor your answers to fit the category – it doesn’t work the other way round I’m afraid.

4 Write things simply, don’t over complicate or go into irrelevant detail. Keep to the point and where possible tell it as a story with a beginning, middle and end. Also, don’t use industry jargon; the judge may not know your industry so may not have a clue what you’re talking about.

5 Put things in a chronological order as well as keeping projects together (where applicable). Make it so the reader (judge) doesn’t have to jump around trying to work out what goes with what and when.

6 Clarify your answers. For example, in the Entrepreneur of the Year it asks ‘What specific challenges have you overcome to get where you are today.’ As well as identifying your challenges, tell a story of how overcoming the challenges has impacted on you and your business. The difference it has made and what it would have been if you had not overcome the challenge(s).

7 Give supporting evidence. This can be many things. For example if you’ve created a positive social media campaign that really helped your business create a table or a graph showing the results. Screen shot some of the posts you created and the analytics that go with it. If relevant to the award, ask clients or customers to write testimonials on letter headed paper and include them. You can also include relevant financial information in the form of graphs or tables. However, don’t include any supporting evidence that isn’t relevant to the award criteria.

8 Stick to the word count. Do not go over – even by a word. It could be that the online form automatically cuts out after the allocated word count.

9 Let your passion for your business shine through. Passion is everything in business, plus it’s contagious.

10 Proof read! Plus write your nomination off-line first. Save it and copy and paste it into the online form. It’ll save a lot of tears in the long-run.

Conwy Businesses Leading Light is named…

The Conwy Business Awards 2016 took place at Venue Cymru, Llandudno last Friday evening. There were over 350 guests in attendance including representatives from the Conwy business community, councillors and dignitaries. There were over 110 entries and the ion Leadership award was awarded to Nina Sardar, Founder of f2n Business Network.

Nina Sardar loves to network!  “I have seen the benefits in my career through networking - meeting new contacts, inter-trading with other local businesses and as a direct result, generating sales.” Nina Sardar

This love of networking and the realisation that North Wales in particular needed a business boost led Nina Sardar to create f2n Business Network, formally Free2Network on June 5th 2010. f2n Business Network has grown extensively over the last five years,  we’ve had a 300% rise in membership since 2014.

Nina’s initial vision for f2n Business Network was to create a business network, which was affordable to join for all businesses based in North Wales and Cheshire. This network is inclusive to all those who either work in or own a business, those thinking to start a business and those managing a business. The aim of f2n is to benefit all businesses in the region and boost the local economy as a whole.

Nina believe’s 100% that personal contact is crucial in business; getting business people together, meeting face-to-face, helps forge stronger links within other members of the business community and boosts the area in terms of working together. If you’re starting out in business it can sometimes be a lonely time, a lot of f2n members enjoy meeting and are able to discuss any problems they may be facing at work with other like-minded business people and can also tap into support and services available through presentations given my other members.

Buying from local suppliers is the key to boosting our local economy. That’s why as a company, f2n Business Network purchase as many products and services from local suppliers (90% in 2012, rising to 96% in 2015).
f2n Business Network also support the local community and charitable causes through their “Charity of the Year” campaign which was introduced in 2013. Before introducing a charity of the year they raised funds for various charities throughout the year, starting in 2011, these charities included RNIB, Children in Need and Pancreatic Cancer Awareness.

Since 2013 (in less than three year’s) f2n Business Network members have raised £12,614.77, by the end of this year we should have hit over £15,000!  f2n Business Network was also named as Finalist in the Conwy Business Awards Corporate Social Responsibility Award.

It’s an incredible honour - thank you.” Nina Sardar

f2n Business Network raises over £12,000 for charities!

As a group, f2n Business Network is a business networking organisation which supports and hosts over 200 events each year for small and micro-businesses across North Wales & Cheshire. For the past three year’s our members have democratically elected a Charity of the Year for all members to support.

We are delighted to announce that last year members raised an incredible £3,024.39 for Wales Air Ambulance. Wales Air Ambulance is an all Wales charity providing emergency air cover for those who face life-threatening illness or injuries. It is their mission to aid the relief of sickness and injury, and the protection of human life, by the provision of an air ambulance service across Wales.

There are three helimed crews based in the North (Caernarfon), Mid (Welshpool) and South (Swansea) of Wales. Each crew has of one pilot and two advanced life support paramedics who are trained in the latest techniques in pre-hospital emergency care to ensure the patient receives the most effective treatment. The charity needs to raise £6 million every year to operate the service. The charity raises all the funds required for the day-to-day running of missions, with each mission on average costing £1500.

Businesses from Around the UK Get Recognition at the 5th Annual Free2Network Awards

Over 150 businesses from all over the UK attended the recent Free2Network Business Awards held at the St George’s Hotel, Llandudno recently.

This is the fifth year of the awards and founder of Free2Network, Nina Sardar, said the support for the awards has never been higher.

We received a staggering number of entries to the awards this year, each of them winners in their own right. I know that Margaret Carter, our judge and host for the evening had a mammoth task in choosing the overall winners.”

As well as winning a stunning award, hand crafted from Welsh slate embedded on a plinth of oak, each of the 12 award winners will receive a mentoring session from Margaret Carter herself. Margaret is a multi-award winner in her own right, business entrepreneur and self-proclaimed CEO – Chief Excitement Officer and founder of Patchwork Traditional Food Company.

Margaret , known for her honest and straight talking approach, didn’t disappoint when she opened the ceremony with a passionate and thought provoking speech. She told the 150 guests:

“You are here at the Free2Network awards to celebrate the businesses that are the best in their field. Being the best means that you should never doubt your passion for your business. If your passion goes then get out.

Being in business means you must remember people buy from people and when you’re passionate about what you do and how you do it, it shines through, always remember that. Your passion is a valuable asset in your business so don’t undervalue it. You may have a similar product to your competitors but make your customer service the best it can be, combined with your passion for your business and you have a winning formula that people will pay for.

Margaret continued:” It isn’t b***dy easy running your own business. There are ups and downs and it can be b***dy hard work but by being the best makes it all worthwhile.”

Margaret also urged businesses to understand their weaknesses and to seek help when it’s needed. She said:
It doesn’t matter what you can’t do, know your strengths and bring people in to deal with them and focus on what you can do. Getting the help you need when you need it makes a huge difference to any business.”

She also warned of the power of karma, saying:
“In business as in life, don’t s**t on anyone or it will come back and bite you. That supplier or contact you treated badly in the past could well be a future client and you’ve already screwed up. It’s karma and be aware of it.”

Finishing off her speech, Margaret gave the audience a final piece of advice. She said:
“Keeping track of the small details is what will set you apart from your competitors. Making sure things are done as they should be is crucial.

“It’s your job as the business owner to be a culture carrier. You need your people to give a damn about your business. Creating a positive culture is key to business success. No one loves your business like you do but being surrounded by people who care about your business is essential.

You are all unique and I would urge all of you to keep that uniqueness and play to your strengths. People may try and copy you but no one but you has the soul and the essence that you put into the business at the beginning so everything else becomes a poor imitation.”

Following a four course meal Margaret then announced the winners, who are as follows:

Winner of Green Business of the Year, sponsored by Building Design Wales was Freyaluna, who hand make natural skincare in rural north Wales. Their products are based on traditional herbal remedies and are blended to feel and smell good and most importantly to be good for your skin.

Margaret said of Freyaluna: “I particularly like your concept as I am personally passionate about avoiding all ‘Nasties’ in every area of my life. The thoroughness of your approach to detail in making all areas of your business “Green and Clean” right from making the product until it gets delivered is to be commended.

Why Entrepreneur of the Year 2014, Alice Murray owner of Giggles and Games knows you should enter

Alice shares her story with you which shows the power of winning a National business award.

“I decided to enter the Free2Network Business Awards because I thought it may be beneficial to Giggles and Games. I was lucky enough to be a Finalist in two categories, which blew me away! To be a finalist was a great accolade for me and I could start to tell everyone about it. It immediately created a news worthy story, so I was fortunate to have a couple of press releases about Giggles and my journey.” Alice Murray, Giggles and Games

“The ceremony itself was beautiful, from the venue, to the people and the presentation. It was a lovely atmosphere but relaxed enough to enjoy the evening. I won Entrepreneur of the Year 2014 as judged by Saira Khan. It was one the highlights of my life, to be recognised for my hard work was just incredible.”

“A year on, I still feel really proud of it. As for Giggles and Games, there was another press release and an increased social media buzz. I was invited to Westminster for a tour and lunch, as a result Giggles and Games was later discussed in Parliament, prior to the Budget, to show that small businesses are thriving.

“I would say that you have everything to gain, both personally and for your business by entering” Alice Murray, Giggles and Games

Why I’d strongly recommend you enter this year’s Free2Network Awards by Rich Brady, Recruit Packs

Last year Rich Brady of Recruit Packs was crowned Free2Network Business Man of the Year, here’s why Rich would encourage you to nominate for this year’s Free2Network Business Awards.

Recruit Packs provides recruits to the Armed Services all the kit they need. On announcing Rich Brady as winner last year’s Judge & Host TV Presenter, BBC’s “The Apprentice” Finalist & Business Woman Saira Khan said
This is a really, really amazing business. In just seven months Recruit Packs are supplying 3% of the British Army, this is a brilliant acheivement in such a short time”.

We caught up with Rich who said “Winning Businessman of the Year was a fantastic feeling and a great conclusion to 2014”.

Launching the Recruit Packs brand, developing my leadership skills through LEAD Wales, hiring staff (something that I’d not done before), helping to run Denbigh Army Surplus Ltd and an office refurbishment, as you can imagine, made for quite an intense year. Getting recognition for those efforts at the Free2Network awards was immense. It was a ‘pat on the back’ that fueled my enthusiasm leading into 2015. As a small business owner, there’s no time to lose focus or take your foot off the gas. Sure there’s hard and difficult times, but you need to push through them and business awards and competions help spur you along.” Rich continues

It was a great evening, the team thoroughly enjoyed it. Good food, great atmosphere and a fantastic selection of business owners.I’d strongly recommend entering the Free2Network business awards to everyone. You deserve some credit and what do you have to lose?” Rich Brady, Recruit Packs

This year’s Free2Network Business Awards has twelve categories for you to nominate yourself, another busines person or organisation. The awards are open to any business with a base in the UK to enter. Entry is free and all Finalists are notified and need to be available to attend the black tie awards ceremony on Friday 20th November.

National Biscuit Day donations to Conwy Food Bank

Friday May 29th, Free2Network celebrated National Biscuit Day at the Afon Conwy, Llandudno Junction.

Thank you to all our members who brought packets of biscuits with them to Free2Network in Junction on Friday May 29th as we celebrated National Biscuit Day. All of the packets of biscuits have been donated to the Conwy Food Bank.

Conwy Food Bank is a non-funded voluntary organisation which endeavours to feed people living in the County of Conwy who are in crisis and are unable to afford food. We are independent and not part of a national network of foodbanks and our storeroom is given to us rent free so our overheads are therefore very low.

There can be many reasons for people finding themselves in financial difficulty such as sanction of benefits, relationship breakdowns, debt, accommodation issues, illness and family problems. Donations are taken to our storeroom and made into parcels to suit single people, couples or families and contain enough nutritious food to last around a week. Referrals are made to us for food parcels by professional organisations who are aware of the predicament of the person or family.

Food parcels are taken to delivery points to be collected by the recipients or to be delivered by their referrer/ support worker. For more information http://www.conwyfoodbank.co.uk

My ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

See Free2Network Founder Nina Sardar taking the #ALSIceBucketChallenge!

I thought the #ALSicebucket challenge was a bit of a craze or fad but then I read more about ALS - which is more commonly known as Motor Neurone Disease.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting.

MND can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. However, not all symptoms necessarily happen to everyone and it is unlikely they will all develop at the same time, or in any specific order.

Although there is currently no cure for MND, symptoms can be managed to help you achieve the best possible quality of life.

Once I learn’t more I wanted to take part and also make a donation.
Thanks to Vicky Cutler for nominating me. Click here to watch me!

I nominate the lovely Rachel Elnaugh and Saira Khan as well as Chris Russell, CR Sailing.
You have just 24 hours to complete your challenge.

Former TV Apprentice Star to judge Free2Network Business Awards

Apprentice star, TV presenter and entrepreneur Saira Khan has been named as this year’s celebrity host and judge at this year’s Free2Network awards.  The celebrity entrepreneur first came to our attention as a contestant in the hit TV show The Apprentice in 2005 and has rarely been off our screens since.

The announcement was made during the award launch event held last week where Free2Network members and past winners were first to hear the news.

Speaking to (Free2Network) Saira urged businesses to enter the awards:

“We tend to down play our successes but entering the Free2Network business awards will allow you to recollect where your business started from and realise how far you have come – giving you time to reflect on your achievements along the way. Entering awards is something every business needs to consider. Accolades really matter to the consumer and public, as well as setting you off against your competitors.

“I remember entering the Apprentice, it was an online entry form just like Free2Network and entering changed my life completely. I now do extraordinary things just because I could be bothered to enter.  If you don’t enter you’re never know what could have been.”

Free2Network founder Nina Sardar said:
“Being able to attract someone as well-known and influential as Saira Khan to not only host our awards but to take time out to judge them too, shows how much the awards have grown since we first launched them four years ago.”

“Saira is genuinely interested in Free2Network and what difference entering our awards can have on people’s business is looking forward to reading all the entries.”

Free2Network is one of the region’s most successful networking organisations with £4.7M worth of business being passed between just over 200 members during 2013 – an increase of 34% on the previous year.

This year’s award categories also include the Rachel Elnaugh Enterprise Award, partnered by A4E, this award was set up thanks to Rachel Elnaugh, last year’s Free2Network host and judge. There is still opportunity for businesses to become an award partner at this year’s awards. Please contact nina@free2network.co.uk for more details.

The awards are being held at a glittering ceremony on Friday 28th November at St George’s Hotel, Llandudno and entry to the awards are now open at www.free2network.co.uk. Entries close on Friday 3rd October 2014

Head of Network named as Rising Star 2014

Each year Wales Business Insider magazine reveal the latest group of 25 enterprising people aged under 40 who think will shake up the Welsh business scene in years ahead.

Our very own Founder, Nina Sardar was named as one of Wales Business Insider magazine’s Rising Star 2014.
She would like to take this opportunitity to thank those who nominated her for this recognition.

Here she talks about her business achievements, ambitions and inspirations.

What does your company do?
Free2Network is a national independent business networking organisation that provides over 250 business and networking each year for small and micro-businesses. Networking is the most affordable way for any business to market themselves and our events also act as a social hub for businesses, who may otherwise feel isolated.

What size or stage is the company at now?
In the last year we have grown more the 50% in our membership figures to 200 members. We have a team of 13 who Host in 18 venues across North Wales, Cheshire & Shropshire. Our 4th Birthday is in October!

What’s your proudest achievement in business so far?
Each year we survey our members asking for feedback on how to develop the network, we receive lots of excellent ideas, the majority of which we implement. The survey also asks how much invoiced business members received from attending Free2Network events during the 12 months prior, last year members invoiced £4.7 Million! - I was blown away!

What inspires you?
My husband, son and all my members - I’m honoured to be a part of their business success!

What’s your ambition
To take Free2Network national - We’re looking for Hosts in venues all across the United Kingdom! Find out more click here.

Why Partner our Business Awards?

Why would an organisation choose to partner our Free2Network Business Awards? We asked three time partner Gareth Jones, MD from Carbon Zero and this is what Gareth said…

“We decided to partner for a 3rd Year for many reasons. With these Awards you don’t just get the exposure on the night and a few free tickets. You get exposure from months in advance starting at the Launch Party. We have been involved in many awards and the Free2Network Business Awards Launch is unique and offers great exposure for your business.”

Gareth went on to say…
“Nina also has a huge Network through Social Media as well offering lots of tweets, RT’s and promotion of the fact you are an Award sponsor. Free2Network has grown year on year and has an exciting future in the Region and we are delighted to continue to support the Awards. Like with any marketing investment you need to get a return, to do this you need to get involved! Paying the money, sitting back and not engaging will see minimal results. Getting involved and engaging with members whether it be through social media or at actual events, will ensure your exposure as an Award partner is maximised.”

Gareth ended by saying…
“If you are a pro active company and looking to gain exposure in the region,  Free2Network Business Awards can certainly help you do this. “

It is your unconscious mind that will determine and guarantee the amount of money that you have in the bank! If you are looking to grow your business and aspire to achieve higher income levels you can not afford to miss this workshop!

Marie-Claire Carlyle , author of “How to become a Money Magnet “ and “Money Magnet Mindset” (Hay House Publishing)  delivers a highly interactive workshop that will help you to uncover the blocks and limits that you have around receiving money, allowing you then to attract more of it! Email Marketing is one of the most effective ways to create lasting relationships with your customers.

This session will share with you tips and tricks on how to produce interesting email campaigns that your customers will want to read. You’ll discover the do’s and don’ts of email marketing and the best way to stop your emails ending up in the junk folder.

The workshop will look at how to think about your brand and position in the marketplace.
Although you may not realise it, many people will judge your business on its looks. A poorly executed, out-of-date or wrong image for your market is likely to make people think the same about your products or services, and give out the wrong message. Simple ways to think about your brand could give you a significant competitive advantage to your business.

In the workshop we will look at your brand and brand values, how you communicate your brand messages to your customer base, your USP, what is it and how to define it and how to deliver a consistent message.

—————————————————————————————————————————

1.30pm
“Making the Most of Social Media for Business” with Teresa Carnall, TBC Marketing

Social Media is still the fastest growing marketing tool out there. But are you making the most of it? This workshop will take a light-hearted look at some of the most effective campaigns and strategies out there as well as a series of thought provoking questions that will help you create a campaign that will work for you.

—————————————————————————————————————————

2.30pm
“User Experience – How is your website performing?”  with Amanda Daniels, Koogar

Yes, of course we meet people face to face and others talk about us but our websites are where everything starts. People try and find us through search engines, look at us to double check we are who we say we are and can do what we say we can do.

Is your website doing what you need it to do?

During this 1 hour session Amanda will go through a number of essential elements for your website and you will walk away with a list of updates and ideas to implement on your site.

Subjects that are going to be covered are:
Usability of a website
Integration of Social Media
Blogging
Search Engine Optimisation (S.E.O)
Driving sales and enquiries
Calls to action

If you want to make your website a better sales tool, then you need to attend this workshop!

Free2Network raised £5,000 for charity in 2013!

A local business networking organisation based in Llandudno was celebrating last week having smashed their target of raising £2,013 in 2013 for their chosen Charity of the Year for 2013.

Members of Free2Network raised an incredible £5,000 for Ty Gobaith / Hope House Children’s Hospice through a range of fundraising activities throughout the year.

Free2Network Founder Nina Sardar and Member Jo Beevers from Kokonoir took part in the charities Midnight Pyjama Walk back in May raising over £160.

Free2Network Member Catherine Adey-Davies, Arbonne completed a 10k race in Aberdeen raising £470 whilst member Geoff Wiltshire, Tudno TV cycled around the Isle of Anglesey raising £140. A large proportion of funds were raised at our Annual Business Awards which took place in November, with one sixth of the ticket price going to Ty Gobaith. We held a raffle and a charity auction on the night with “money can’t buy prizes” which raised over £2,000.

Nina Sardar Founder of Free2Network “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members who took part in all the activities throughout the year plus all those who gave so generously. £5,000 will make such a difference to this valued local charity”.

Hope House Children’s Hospices - Hope House in Oswestry and Ty Gobaith in Conwy - provide specialist nursing care in addition to practical and emotional support to terminally ill and life limited children and young people.

Dragon’s Den star agrees to judge 2014 awards following Free2Network success

ENTREPRENEUR and former Dragon’s Den star Rachel Elnaugh will judge the Free2Network Business Awards 2014 following the success of this year’s competition.

The announcement was made on the day twelve business leaders and organisations were announced winners and presented special trophies during a glittering gala dinner evening at St George’s Hotel in Llandudno.

Finalists from across North Wales gathered for the event hosted by Rachel who led the tributes to those named on the shortlists as well as winning awards.

image

Nina Sardar, Founder and Managing Director of Free2Network, was delighted with the success of the event and Rachel’s decision to be involved again next year.
She said: “It was an outstanding evening and a real tribute to the quality of businesses and business leaders in the UK today. The passion and energy at the dinner was tangible and the delight in winning was so rewarding to see that Rachel has agreed to be involved in judging the 2014 awards just shows what an exciting journey the 2013 awards have been. The awards evening just topped it all off perfectly.”

Rachel, the first female Dragon of the BBC’s hit business pitch show, described winning awards as an essential part of entrepreneurial spirit.
She said: “It was a real honour to judge and present these awards. The standard of entries was high and shows just how committed and innovative business can be. Nina asked me if I would he happy to return next year and I’ve been so inspired by what I’ve seen I simply couldn’t say no.”

Unlike many awards I’m asked to judge you’re given a shortlist and are asked to select a winner. This is NOT the case with the Free2Network Business Awards. Nina was adament that every entry be judged fairly, equally and impartially. The finalists and winners should therefore be incredibly proud of their achievements.”
Rachel Elnaugh, Free2Network Business Awards 2013 & 2014 Judge.

Entering awards is a “no-brainer” for Free2Network winner Bryn Bella

When does a five-bedroom guesthouse run by a husband-and-wife team get to compete with the likes of Brains Brewery and the Principality Building Society?
        In business awards, of course.

Yet Mark Edwards, who runs Betws-y-Coed Guest House Bryn Bella with wife Joan, believes there are many more rewards to entering business competitions.

The winner of Free2Network’s Green Business of the Year in 2012 said: “About eight or nine years ago we went down to Cardiff for an ecommerce award.
“They came to film a video, which took up half a day, and then we had an overnight stay down there. By the time I added it up, we were spending something like £800, not to mention the time out of the business.

“Even so, we were down in Cardiff alongside Brains and the Principality and all their IT resource, as one of three businesses shortlisted for an e-commerce award, and the great and the good were watching us. It felt fantastic.”

Mark is clear that you don’t even have to be shortlisted to benefit from entering business awards.

“It’s a bit like doing a self-audit on your business,” he said. “You can easily sit back when things are ticking along and tell yourself, and everybody else, what you do and how well everything is going.

“When you enter an award, you’re forced to take a step back and ask yourself, ‘why do I do these things?’ It makes you stop and think. It’s such as important process because it’s like the old saying, ‘If you keep doing the same thing, you get the same results.’

“People say they don’t have time to enter, or can’t afford to. You can’t afford not to.”

Since its award-worthy efforts with e-commerce, Bryn Bella has made a name for itself as a champion of “green tourism.” Even with a Gold Star Award from the AA – reward enough for many accommodation providers – the guesthouse strives to minimise its impact on the environment. It was the first tourism business in Snowdonia to install charge points for electric cars and the first in North Wales to be awarded Gold with the Green Tourism Business Scheme.

Entering awards – many of which have a “green” category – has helped Bryn Bella develop this unique side to its business.

“The rewards for entering competitions outweigh the effort required to enter them,” Mark said. “As far as we are concerned, entering is a no-brainer.”

Former Dragon’s Den star Rachel Elnaugh will judge and present the annual Free2Network Business Awards at the St George’s Hotel in Llandudno on Friday 29 November.

Entries are welcome (and free) from any business with a UK office.

Complete your entry online on the Free2Network website at www.free2network.co.uk. Deadline for nominations is Friday 11 October.

“We found that the whole experience was of great value to our business. It made us stop and look at what we had already achieved and then set a schedule to improve for the coming year.”

Dragon urges Welsh businesses to enter awards

FORMER Dragon’s Den star Rachel Elnaugh has urged North Wales businesses to enter a business competition she will judge and present in the region later this year.

The celebrated businesswoman described winning awards as “the pinnacle of the entrepreneurial journey” and believes her own successes led the BBC to cast her as the first female Dragon in the hit show. She will judge and present the annual Free2Network Business Awards in Llandudno this November and says North Wales businesses stand much to gain by entering.

She admitted that while running her £25million Red Letter Days business she didn’t give awards much thought until her PR manager said she should enter.
“He said, ‘Come on, we’re going to make you famous,’ but I didn’t really want to be famous,” she said.
“But winning awards is great for publicity. Apart from that it’s also terrific for motivation gives you a little ego boost, and it certainly opens doors for you.
“When you get into that awards circuit you move into new circles, and meet inspiring and influential people.
“That’s certainly what happened to me and that’s how the BBC recognised me.”

Rachel’s Red Letter Days was the first business to sell vouchers for novelty days out, such as balloon rides and motor racing.
From the age of 24 she grew it from nothing on a shoestring budget to a £14-turnover household name which at its height was making £1m profit a year.
She won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2002 and was shortlisted for the Veuve Clicquot Businesswoman of the Year Award along with Barbara Cassani, Jo Malone, Sly Bailey and Chey Garland.

Rachel added: “Marketing is the lifeblood of any business. Don’t underestimate how awards can act as a powerful endorsement of who you are and what you do.
“Entering them certainly paid off for me.”

Free2Network founder Nina Sardar, who lives in Llandudno, said that as well as being a great judge, Rachel made the ideal role model for entering awards.
“I knew her story and I really wanted to get her involved with Free2Network’s annual awards,” she said.

“I was thrilled when she said yes. She’s an inspiration and I hope her message encourages many business to enter Free2Network and other business awards.”

        Entry is FREE.
Entries are welcome from any business with a UK office.
Complete your entry online on the Free2Network website at www.free2network.co.uk. Deadline for nominations is Friday 11 October.

The Awards Gala Dinner takes place at the St George’s Hotel in Llandudno on Friday 29 November.

Follow Rachel’s Three Top Tips for a winning entry:

        1. Be very brief: most entries go on forever but when you have so many categories and so many entries, it’s the concise and succinct submissions that stand out

        2. Make it visual: use images, graphics, even video. And include a picture of you – let the judges see the face or team behind the business

        3. Make it real: find a way to get a sample of your product or service in front of the judges in advance. Bring your business to life

THE GIFT - say thank you to someone who has helped you reach your business goals!

Free2Network have been approached by television production Wall to Wall, one of the UK’s leading independent production companies with a reputation for making intelligent and sensitively made content. Wall to Wall are most well known for making programmes such as ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ and the hit family reunion series ‘Long Lost Family’.

They are now in the process of making a new series for BBC 1, ‘The Gift’ (working title) which is a programme that will help people try and make amends for something that they have done or express their gratitude to someone that has changed their life.  For many people it is often not possible to do this themselves – the person they want to thank may be a stranger and they don’t know how to find them – or perhaps they can’t find the courage to make an approach alone.

With a team of professional mediators, psychologists and experts in tracing people, the programme will help put these people in touch, help them find a gesture or gift that represents their feelings and support them through a meeting.

They are currently trying to find people who may need their help hence contact Free2Network. The pragramme makers hope to include a range of different stories within the series and they have been looking for the inspirational stories of individuals who have been successful or turned their lives around. The programme may appeal to those who are able to draw on particular moments and people significant to them and would now like the chance to say sorry or thank you. In the business world it could be the kind gesture that helped someone on the road to success or the opportunity to make amends where success has come at a cost.

Are you a successful business men or women that has been helped along the way or made sacrifices to get to their goal?
Perhaps you know of people with whom the issues I have mentioned may strike a chord?

        Tim Smit on Networking

Last Friday I attended Spotlight North Wales, a conference held annually in North Wales. Tim Smit KBE, Chief Executive and Co-Founder of the Eden Project was the keynote speaker and I adored Tim’s honest and jargon free presentation. Thank you Tim, you made my Spotlight 2011!

Tim’s talk particually struck chords with me as he mentioned “networks” on a number of occasssions throughout his talk.
Tim Smit said, “The best ideas come out of a casual environment and circumstances”.

Tim says we need to “Toss ideas about”!

So if you would like to toss a few ideas about then you are most welcome to join us…
